Most guys walk into their first pilates class with the same thought: how hard can this be?
About twelve minutes later, legs shaking through a slow single-leg press, they get their answer.
Pilates has a reputation problem with men. It looks gentle from the outside. It isn’t. Here’s what it actually trains, why so many lifters and athletes are adding it, and how to walk into your first class at HILI without feeling out of place.
It Looks Easy Because It’s Slow. That’s Exactly Why It’s Hard.
In the gym, momentum helps. You swing a little, bounce out of the bottom of a squat, let gravity do half the lowering. Slow, controlled work takes all of that away.
On the XFormer, every rep moves against spring tension at a deliberately slow tempo. Your muscles stay loaded the whole time, including the small stabilizers that usually ride along for free. That’s where the shake comes from.

Took my first Xformer class with Cheyenne, she made me feel comfortable & she was really patient. It wasn't a beginner class however she didn't make me feel out of place and she was very welcoming she broke down the movements very well! Definitely is not an easy class but well worth it.
Quiriat RiveraWhat Pilates Trains That the Gym Usually Doesn’t
| Typical gym session | HILI XFormer class | |
|---|---|---|
| Tempo | Fast lifts, quick reps | Slow, controlled, time under tension |
| Muscles worked | Big movers: chest, back, quads | Big movers plus the deep stabilizers |
| Core | Bracing under load | Deep core endurance and control |
| Impact on joints | Moderate to high | Low |
| Mobility | Often skipped | Built into the strength work |
| What you’ll feel tomorrow | Sore chest and legs | Sore in places you didn’t know existed |
None of this replaces lifting. It fills the gaps lifting leaves, especially in hip stability, deep core strength, and moving well through a full range. If you play a sport, our pilates for athletes post goes deeper.
You Won’t Be the Only Guy There
The class may skew female. It won’t feel like a room you don’t belong in. Every body belongs at HILI, and our instructors coach the person in front of them, not a stereotype.
Plenty of men took their first class because a partner dragged them along. Most of them kept coming back on their own.

First time today @ HILI with Tia + loved it. It was my boyfriends first ever Pilates class and the first one for me in a long time. Tia was so helpful + motivational! Bonus she’s a millennial with a bomb playlist ♥️ We’ll be doing mondays weekly with her!
Michelle DeLuciaFlexibility Is Not a Prerequisite
This is the excuse we hear most: “I’m not flexible enough for pilates.” That’s like saying you’re not strong enough for the gym.
You don’t need to touch your toes. Pilates builds mobility by strengthening you through a bigger range of motion, a little more each class. Tight hips and hamstrings are exactly why you should go, not why you shouldn’t.
How to Start
- Book an XFormer class first: it’s the most familiar, strength-focused option. Form Foundation is built for first-timers.
- Wear fitted shorts or joggers and a fitted shirt: loose gear catches on the machine
- Grip socks are required: the studio sells them at the front desk
- Arrive 10 minutes early: your instructor will set up the machine with you
- Leave your ego at the door: go slower than feels natural. That’s where the work is.
Our first class guide covers the rest.
Common Questions
Is pilates good for men?
Yes. Pilates builds deep core strength, hip stability, and control through a full range of motion, the qualities heavy lifting and most sports tend to underwork. It’s low impact, so it adds training demand without extra stress on joints.
Is pilates hard for men?
Most men find their first class much harder than expected. The slow tempo removes momentum, so stabilizing muscles work the entire time. Being strong in the gym helps, but it doesn’t make slow, controlled work easy.
Do men do pilates at HILI?
Yes. Men train at every HILI studio, often alongside partners or as part of a mixed training week with lifting or sport. Every class is coached to the person, with modifications for every move.
What should men wear to pilates?
Fitted shorts or joggers, a fitted shirt, and grip socks. Loose clothing gets caught on the XFormer and makes it harder for your instructor to check your alignment.
Strong in the gym and humbled on the XFormer is a perfectly normal place to start. Book a class at Lake Nona or Waterford Lakes and find out where your gaps are.
